The idea of your teens falling in love for the first time might give you pause, but theres really no way you can avoid the possibility of them wanting to be in a successful relationship with the opposite sex. Rather than sweeping all talks about the desires of the heart under the rug, why not have a sincere and meaningful talk with your child? Its best that they learn about these things from you than from their equally clueless peers. Below are five ways you help your kid deal with these sensitive issues.

1.Not all relationships are the same.
Your childs idea of a successful relationship was most likely formed through the films and television shows theyve seen, as well as the relationships of the people around themincluding your own! While its good to have a peg of sorts, they should know that every successful relationship is a purely unique thing, and that it doesnt have to conform to anyone elses idea of a good partnership. If you dont give them any sort of warning, the break-up will definitely hurt a hundred times more!

4.You will always be there for them.
Going through your very first relationship as a teenager will be one of the greatest challenges your child will ever have to face. Let them know that no matter what happens, you will be there for them. You will support their efforts to foster a successful relationship, and should it fail, you will also be there for your child to help ease the pain. The desires of the heart are a very tricky business, and the more emotional support your child can seek from you, the better.

5.Dont let anything get in the way of your studies or other passions.
Its so easy for a teenager to think that love is all they need in the world, but that is definitely eons away from the truth, and they should know better. Be firm with them about focusing on their studies and other passions despite their desires of the heart. If theyve been great at academics, the arts, or whatever else they preoccupied themselves with before, let them know that they shouldnt compromise any of these just for someone they like. A successful relationship allows you to focus on things other than your partner, so make sure they know this from the get-go.

Its important that you educate your child about matters of the heart as soon as possible so they wont find themselves in a situation they cant handle. While you cant always be physically present with them, at the very least you have prepared them to deal with certain issues. And if things dont work out between them and their significant others, they know they can always turn to you.
