The WACA, which lies close to the Swan River and is a pleasant walk from the centre of Perth, was opened in 1893, but Test cricket did not take place at the ground until Ray Illingworth's England drew with Australia in 1970, a game that marked Greg Chappells international debut. Its name has punctuated the cricket history books ever since.

Australian fast bowler Merv Hughes took an unusual hat-trick at the ground in 1988 against the West Indies, his three victims being spread over two innings, three different overs and more than 24 hours. In 2000 Glenn McGrath completed a more conventional hat-trick, also against the West Indies, and passed 300 Test wickets in the process.

Three years later, Australian Matthew Hayden stuck up for the batsmen as he flayed the Zimbabwean bowlers to make 380, breaking Brian Lara's Test record of most runs in an innings, although Lara reclaimed the record shortly afterwards.

The WACA has a reputation for being a hard, fast wicket as the former England batsman David Lloyd can testify. On his Ashes debut in 1974 Lloyd had his protective box smashed by the Australian quick bowler Jeff Thomson and has used the story as part of his after-dinner speaking routine ever since.

The pitch is hard and bouncy because of the intense Western Australian heat that can get up to 40 degrees, which is only eased, for the players and fans, by the 'Fremantle Doctor' a cooling breeze which rises up in the mid-afternoon.

The museum is open on match days featuring the great names of Western Australian cricket with entrance costing just $5.

The ground has been used for Australian Rules football, rugby league and concerts but many of these activities have since moved to the larger Subiaco Oval which is 3 km (2 miles) to the west of the centre of Perth.
