To file your tax online, these are the steps that you need to follow:
Browse the income taxindiaefiling website.

Register yourself as a new user by clicking the Register link in the in the 'Login' section.


In the registration form, you have to fill your ten digit PAN (Permanent Account Number) number. After that, click the Submit button. Then, you have to fill your personal information in five different boxes that is necessary for registration process and click submit.

Now, you will redirect to a page that already contains your address and you have to put a new password that you use while logging in your account. It will also ask for your telephone number, e-mail address. Fill these details and then, click Submit button.


After submitting information, you will be redirected to the tax returns filing page. It shows you various links for filing returns.

Now, click on e-filing for assessment year 2011-2012 links. Clicking this link will redirect you to another page that has an excel utility. You can download this excel utility that help you in filing tax returns.

There are different excel utility for each category. For example, if you are a salaried person, then download ITR-1.

Next step is to fill all the details asked in the excel form. Then, save this file on your local machine.

Now, to upload your file, click Submit Return button.

After submitting, you can see a Pop-up form in the opened window. That pop-up form is your acknowledgement. This proves your successful submission of tax return form.

The next step is to print the acknowledgement. The only job that now left is that you have to fill the verification part of the form. Now, duly fill the verification form with your signature and send this form via post to your nearest income tax office. Remember that you have to send this form within 15 days after filing your tax return online and if the income tax department will not get it on time, then you have to fill your return form again.

To avoid any postal delays, you can take the help of digital signature. There are many companies that provide online service of verifying your signature. Hence, you can fill the verification part of your tax returns acknowledgement online and submit that verification form on incometaxindiaefiling website.

This seems very helpful for tax payers as online return filing saves time and needs less effort as compared to filing tax return through paperwork.
