Teachers will mark and assess a great deal of writing and it cannot all be marked at the same level. When marking any work the teacher refers to the objectives for that work.

If the piece of writing is of a particular text type, assessment of writing must begin with the consideration of the aims originally formulated for the piece of work. The product cannot be judged unless these are taken into account.

The assessment must also take into consideration the capabilities of the child producing the work. A piece of writing may be good for one child but well below anothers capacity. The assessment should also focus on the indented audience for the writing and whether it is appropriate for this audience.

There are many ways of finding guidance for marking and a prompt sheet can be used when thoroughly marking a piece of childrens writing. This sort of piece might then to be put in a portfolio of the childs work and be used to review later on to see the progress they have made. It can also be put into the reporting teachers assessment at the end of the year to show the parents how their child is getting on. As a teacher, its important that you set a particular writing assessment task and analyse the results carefully.

You can quickly read the writing that you are making to get a sense of what it is about and an overall impression of how well it reads and how closely it follows the guidelines to the task which has been set. You should make sure that you decide which aspects of the analysis are most relevant and useful to you.

This can vary depending on the age of the child. For example, you may not expect children which are in year 2 to be writing very complex sentences but you may be interested in their use of adjectives, especially if this is something that you have been teaching them.

You may also want to look at the nature of the task and look at any descriptions that contain few variations of the same verb, although noun groups may be more significant. You may want to look to see if there are many adjectives used and also if they vary the terms that are used within the piece of work that you are marking.

You should start with the aspects indentified above and read through all of the writing again and this way you will be able to easily identify the important factors.
