Grumbling Doesnt Help

By:

You dont make progress by standing on the sidelines, whimpering and complaining. You make progress by implementing ideas, Shirley Hufsteddler, American lawyer who served as the first U.S. Secretary of Education.
What parent hasnt heard their child whine their way through cleaning their room? What teacher hasnt heard vociferous complaints about the schedule of events or the announcement of a pop quiz? And what do those complaints do other than annoy and aggravate already tenuous situations? When children are being bullied, picked on or treated unfairly, do they grumble to themselves or to someone in authority who could help? If only there was a resource parents and teachers could use to illustrate the less than desirable effect of whining and griping. There is just such a book: Paolo Tiberis The King and the Thief, part of the authors Chronicles of Argoz, Prince Ultan and Princess Maya series.
In this story we read of a Kingdom that is suffering from high taxes and poverty under the reign of a highly selfish King.
People were not happy and his [the Kings] name was spoken with a great, sorrowful tone.
The people were busy talking bad about the king and complaining to each other. But they were not choosing to take action. Did they choose to ask to speak to the King or his advisors? Did they stage peaceful protests? Did they try? The story doesnt reveal much about anything the villagers may have tried in the past. It does reveal that the Kings heart was not changed; he still ordered his guards to arrest a man seen stealing to feed his family. Grumbling, complaining, whining, or griping does not change hearts and situations at least not for the better.
Children can be taught to take action instead of grumbling. Instead of grumbling about always being told to clean their room, children can learn to just keep it clean. Its really a very simple matter. Instead of griping that pop quizzes exist, children can be instructed to learn their material as they progress in class and thus be prepared for what they know will come. Instead of suffering at the hands of unfair peers, children can learn to stand up to them or take action by alerting the proper authorities whether it be a parent, teacher, or supervisor. Action, not complaining is going to fix most problems.
The people's problems did not get fixed by talking about it to each other. One cant help but wonder what the outcome of this story had been had the thief been a griping and complaining louse. What if he had not been a family man just trying to help his family? What if he had been a lying, cheating, badmouthing annoyance of a man? The story could have ended harsher, no doubt. The king would have gotten the notion that such grumbling and complaining and laziness was the real root of the kingdoms downfall, and not his own selfish behaviors, and the kingdom would not have been improved at all. Children can be shown through these stories and by the example of those they look up to that complaining without action does little or nothing to help improve bad situations.

Chronicles of King Argoz, Prince Ultan and Princess Maya is the first of a series of riveting books in the Legends of Altai series by renowned self-awareness expert, Paolo F. Tiberi.
The book is revolutionary as it teaches kids respect, life lessons and values through storytelling, a language that all kids can understand.
The Legends of Altai is intended as a Life Manual for children and has been described as 'The Secret meets The Alchemist and the Chicken Soup for the Soul' rolled into one.
