Hydroponic Growing is Not Natural - It's easy to understand why some people might get this impression when they see a hydroponic system in action. To the uninitiated it may seem like the hydroponics grower is trying to create a "freak crop" of monster plants using something a mad scientist would use. The real truth is that by using hydroponics you're providing plants with all they require in order to develop their full potential. The plants still require the same nutrients and moisture you would find in a soil garden. By its very nature a hydroponic garden produces healthier and more vibrant plants that are far less prone to insect attacks. Hydroponic growers usually choose not to use harsh chemicals on their plants so in reality the produce from a hydroponic garden may be more "natural" than the produce you might see in a traditional garden.

Hydroponics Has To Be Indoors - The fact is that hydroponics works under almost any conditions, indoors or outdoors. Of course if you plan to grow outdoors then you do need a suitable climate. Many hydroponics systems are running outside in greenhouses which help to extend the growing season in less suitable climates. A lot of large scale growers place their operation outside in warmer climates without the use of greenhouses. A lot of people prefer to grow indoors to take advantage of the lighting situation and growing indoors means they can choose to grow crops that are out of season.

Hydroponic Lights Are Harmful To Humans - Some of the florescent lighting used by some people when growing hydroponics does tend to look a lot like the lights used in a tanning bed. The lighting generally used in hydroponics is not harmful to the eyes or the skin. Since plants do not require much ultra violet light to grow properly the lighting used with hydroponics does not give off much UV light so they are actually no more harmful than an average household light bulb.

Grow Lights Must Remain On 24 Hours A Day - A lot of people who consider setting up a hydroponics system make the decision not to do so because they feel that running powerful lights will cost a fortune. In some cases, as with seedlings you might want to have your lights on 24 hours a day but generally speaking most growers use a 18/6 cycle during the growing phase. 18 hours of light and 6 hours of total darkness. For the flowering phase the lights are usually swapped to a 12/12 cycle. By doing this growers are imitating the sun's light cycle and doing the most to promote bud growth. Grow lights are built to be efficient so the reality is that they may actually cost less to run per lumen than the average ceiling light in your house. LED grow lights may actually use less energy than a typical light bulb.
