Green Tea Benefits

By:

Tea, the most widely-consumed beverage in the world after water, is made from the leaves of the tea plant (scientific name Camellia sinensis) and is mainly of three kinds: Oolong tea, green tea, and black tea. White tea is also sometimes found in the market. While black tea is more popular in the West, green tea rules in the Eastern part of the world, specially in countries like China, where green tea originated, and Japan. However, green tea has a number of health benefits that nowadays make it more appealing than black tea. Green tea is made with such leaves of the tea plant that have undergone minimum oxidation during the processing steps. It is believed to have benefits that other kinds of tea do not have.

Traditional medicine in South Asian countries believes that green tea helps to control bleeding from wounds, helps to heal wounds, improve digestion, and regulate body temperature. The Kissa Yojoki (Book of Tea), written by a Zen priest named Eisai in 1191, maintains that drinking green tea can cure beriberi disease, ease the effects of alcohol, cure blotchiness and indigestion, improve urinary and brain function, and prevent fatigue apart from quenching thirst and acting as a sitmulant. More recently, green tea has been proved to have polyphenols, specially catechins, vitamin C, minerals such as manganese, chromium, zinc and selenium, phytochemicals, tocopherols, carotenoids, and antioxidants. In vitro and animal studies have shown that green tea can reduce the risk of cancer and heart disease and also have beneficial effects on dental cavities, bone density, and kidney stones. However, this has not been proved in the case of humans.

Unverified claims suggest that green tea reduces cholesterol, helps prevent diseases like Alzheimer's and Parkinson's, helps in the prevention and treatment of cancer and multiple sclerosis, helps in weight loss and promoting longevity and in preventing the aging of the skin.
