Green Tea Baldness Solution Or Delicious Beverage?

By:

Have you had a cup of green tea? If you are like many people on earth, your answer is absolutely. Next question, have you ever used green tea to improve your health? If you said no, consider this: scientists continue to find several reasons why green tea should be used for elevating health and not just soothing your mouth. If you have been near a television or radio during the past ten years, you have likely heard about the anti-oxidant properties found in green tea. A group of Korean scientists have found a new medical application for green tea - baldness prevention. Yes, according Dr. Kwon , green tea prevents hair shedding. For men and women who do not want to use drugs like minoxidil, finasteride or dutasteride to fight balding, green tea may be the solution they have been looking to find.

In 2006, Dr. Kwon and his colleagues aimed to test a hypothesis - can the anti-oxidants in green tea stop balding by fighting androgens in the head. Androgens are the hormones that cause most types of hair loss for women and men. The research team in the Labaratory of Cutaneous Aging and Hair Research lead by Dr. Kwon recruited study subjects to provide hair . The research team chose hair follicles that were currently in the anagen phase or growth period and they grew the hair follicles in well dishes. What the research team found was amazing. Hair exposed to green tea, in particular epigallocatechin-3-gallate, a natural element in green tea, displayed a greater capacity to encourage growth and withstand hair follicle shrinking.

To understand why these discoveries are so momentous consider the following: (1) A limited number of investigations have been conducted by scientists, objectively testing how natural elements, like green tea, may prevent hair loss. (2) Studies that have taken place, often have biased methods, which makes the validity of the conclusions difficult to substantiate. (3) Additional natural treatments in the battle to prevent thinning hair, and grow a woman or man's own hair are in need.

Can I use Green Tea to Prevent My Hair Loss?

The answer is yes and no. Yes, the scientists discovered that green tea displays the capacity to encourage hair re-growth through a process of hair growth and reduction of hair follicle apoptosis (death). The scientists did not brew a cup of tea and splash it on the scalp of the subjects. Rather, the doctors identified the epigallocatechin-3-gallate from the green tea and combined this formula with ethanol. This mixture was then applied to the scalps of the research subjects.

It is believed that ethanol acts as a transporter, which facilitates absorption. This means the benefits of green tea is more readily realized by applying the green tea to the head within a mixture of ethanol. This doesn't mean that you cannot pour green tea on your head. It just suggests your results may not be consistent with the impressive findings of the research - unless you can develop the same formula. Short of being a chemist or great at combining ingredients, the best answer is to learn about all natural hair loss treatments that include green tea.
