A "green building", also known as a high performance or sustainable building, is a structure that is created utilizing materials and processes in an ecological and resource-efficient manner throughout the life-cycle of the building. Green building methods can be integrated at any stage- siting, design, construction, renovation, and deconstruction- and can be incorporated into any type of building- homes, schools, commercial and public buildings, laboratories, and health-care facilities. Building green offers a range of benefits that protect and restore human health and the environment.

Often higher costs are associated with building green- this is not entirely true. Many materials used in green construction are the same or even lower cost, such as recycled materials including: metals, heavy timbers, plastics, glass, masonry products, and ceramics. There are some methods and materials that do cost more upfront, however the life-cycle of the product must be taken into consideration. Green materials tend to last longer, require less maintenance, and lower operating costs. A certain paint may cost twice as much initially, but last four times longer, which attributes it to being a better buy in the long run. Thinking green requires thinking long-term.

Green products are those that:

" Conserve natural resources
" Avoid toxic or other emissions
" Reduce environmental impact
" Are made from salvaged, recycled and/or waste materials
" Save energy
" Reduce water usage

Building green reduces our carbon footprint, improves quality of life and health, and is economical. The energy used to power and heat a building comes from the burning of fossil fuels which create a significant amount of carbon dioxide- the most widespread greenhouse gas. A green building reduces energy consumption, and conserves and restores natural resources. The products used in the construction of such a structure reduce and/or eliminate indoor pollution, as a result a more comfortable and healthier living environment is created. Green buildings require less maintenance, lower operating costs, improve employee productivity, and have a higher resale value, therefore being the cost-effective option. Additionally many states offer tax breaks for building green and energy-efficient modifications made to a building or house. Some of those tax incentives and other pertinent information for the State of Utah is available by accessing provided below.

There are a surplus of energy upgrades and retrofitting solutions that can be incorporated into pre-existing structures such as air sealing, HVAC and electrical equipment upgrades, moisture management, duct sealing, window upgrades, thermal insulation improvement and the use of low VOC paint and finish materials.
