Great Movies Set In A Beauty Salon

By:

There have been numerous memorable scenes from films that took place in beauty parlors, and there have even been quite a few great movies set in a beauty salon. This has been a popular subject for Hollywood filmmakers for decades. Women have congregated in the beauty salon for generations, just as men have done the same in the barber shop, which is a movie genre of its own.

The following titles are among the most popular and beloved films set in a beauty salon over the last few decades:

1. Beauty Shop

In 2005, the makers of Barbershop released this American comedy film spin-off, directed by Bille Woodruff and starring Queen Latifa, Alicia Silverstone, Andie Macdowell, Kevin Bacon, Mena Suvari and Djimon Hounsou. As the name more than implies, this film is set in a beauty shop. It all centers around Gina, the character played by Queen Latifah, who was first introduced in the second Barbershop movie, and the goings-on at her beauty salon.

2. The Salon

The year of 2005 was a big one for movies set in beauty salons. This American comedy-drama, directed by Mark Brown and starring Vivica A. Fox, Monica Calhoun and Kym Whitley, takes place in a beauty salon in Baltimore, Maryland. This film focuses on the owner of a beauty salon, who is struggling to save her business and who finds romance along the way.

3. Steel Magnolias

This classic 1989 film had an all-star cast, including the likes of Olympia Dukakis, Sally Field, Daryl Hannah, Dolly Parton, Shirley MacLaine and Julia Roberts. Steel Magnolias follows a group of women in a parish somewhere in the area of Natchitoches, Louisiana, where Truvys Beauty Parlor is located. The lives of the women who work at and visit this beauty salon are all interwoven in this beloved American comedy-drama.

4. Shampoo

There were great movies set in a beauty salon back in the 70s too! This satirical film, directed by Hal Ashby and starring Warren Beatty, Goldie Hawn, Julie Christie, Tony Bill, Lee Grant, Jack Warden and Carrie Fisher (in an early film appearance), centers on two lovers who undo a Beverly Hills hairdresser around 1968s Election Eve, right before Richard Nixon was elected for his first term as president. This film was a great commercial success, bringing in $49,407,734 at the box office and being beaten only by the archetypal film Jaws and cult classics One Flew Over the Cuckoos Nest and The Rocky Horror Picture Show.
