Great Gaming Etiquette

Great Gaming Etiquette

By:

The Internet being what it is, when someone plays online games, it is virtually guaranteed that people will offend someones sensibilities in a small way. In many cases, this can come across as disrespect, bad manners or just a general sense of poor sportsmanship. Some game communities and player bases are more "mature" than others, but even the most established of groups can still have a few that engage in one form of misconduct or another. The anonymity that the Internet affords people tends to allow for a decrease in social niceties - the "Great Internet Fuckwad Theory" and all. Still, in some of the more mature areas, some modicum of "online gaming etiquette" is required.

Be a Good Sport- Do you think laughing at your opponents and bragging your wins make you a good sport? No, these are things that only immature people do. So just play it cool. If you win, dont slap it on the face of your opponent; be humble about it. If you lose, dont take it too personally. Dont call them cheaters just because they won. Be careful not to throw accusations that you cant support. You have to accept the fact that there can be better players out there. What you can do is practice more.

Play Fair- If you value winning, then you must understand the significance of a fair fight. Using foul words just implies that you cant play win without playing dirty. What you ought to do is to keep practicing and learn from the pros. If you feel that you cant handle the competition, then its probably better to just look for a different game, rather than to cheat your way into success.

Dont Spam- Spamming can really be annoying. You dont have to flood the chat system with WTS messages to sell an item. If people arent responding to your messages, it just means theyre not interested. Avoid repeating your message in chat every 2 seconds. If people are not paying attention, wait a minute or two, so you can reach to a new audience.

You were once a Noob Too- There are tons of acronyms and slangs involved in every game. You cant expect everyone to know them all, especially the newbies. Instead of shooing them away and calling them noobs, help them out. Remember, you were a noob too.

Dont be a Quitter- People tend to just disconnect to the game without saying a word. This is an act of rudeness. If you dont think your group isnt doing well, work it out politely by offering a teammate some advice. If your group is not up to the task, take time to explain this to others without insulting them.

For team games, remember that working with others is a must. Victory in a truly team-based game is something that cant be done without working well with the others to understand their strengths and what they bring to the table. Hogging the spotlight only leads to bad performance, since the "star player" tends to drag the entire team down to push himself up.

Ignore Insults- Its not the best course of action to insult back when someone says something bad about you. Doing so will only make you look as pathetic as them. Enjoy the Game- This should probably be the number one rule when playing online games. Games are meant to be fun, so dont take it too seriously. Otherwise, you purpose of doing it is defeated. When something goes wrong, simply laugh it off.
