Anchorage, AK has certainly seen a jump in tourism which is probably due to the popularity of Sarah Palin. Some don't wish to credit Mrs. Palin for this boost but either way people are going. And if you are going, you're going to need to eat. When people think of eating in Alaska, they think of Eskimoes gathered around a fire eating whale meat and mush. You'll be surprised at what Anchorage has cooking these days. One thing is for sure, with the arctic weather, the meals you get will be hearty.

Marx Brothers Café has a fun décor but to Vic (the owner) food is a serious business. You can still see him after 30 years whipping up his famous Caesar salad. With fishing as a major industry you can expect to have a wide and tasty selection. Favorites are the fresh halibut, the oysters, and in July you can get your hands on King Salmon at the peak of the season. Great fresh local ingredients make these meals a standout. Marx Brothers is on the more expensive side but the great service and upscale atmosphere make it a must see.

Traveling with the family can be stressful at times on a long trip. And during instances like that you need comfort food. Pizza is great comfort food and there is no better pizza that Moose's Tooth Pub and Pizza. That might not impress many but it does draw quite a crowd. You'll have a wait as the locals love it. With many local beers on tap, it's a fun place to sit back and relax. We suggest the meat-packed "Backpacker" pizza and for beer they have a tasty Hefeweizen on tap.

And with breakfast not only being the most important meal of the day (also my favorite) we have to make mention of a place that helps us get the day going strong. And with rich bold coffee, the Snow City Café is a local favorite. Get there early to make sure you get a seat (although they do have takeout) because Snow City fills up quickly. I suggest the stuffed French toast with orange cream cheese and also the tasty homemade granola. If you are feeling a little adventurous try the reindeer sausage (they promised it was not Rudolph). You'll love the local hospitality and the chance to meet and talk with native Alaskans right at the next table. And surprisingly enough, you will find timeshares and timeshare resorts available for exchange and rent at timeshare sites like RCI or Intervalworld. I don't hear a lot about timeshare development in Alaska but there are resorts available.

I have noticed quite a few shows on TV based on life in Alaska. It must be because we find that lifestyle so unique. And it is. Residents drive snow mobiles around, workers chop trees and fish, and they have days of very little sun and then days of the year where it is sunny almost all day. With tourism picking up I thought it made sense to talk about the local interesting and tasty food. Enjoy Alaska, the scenery, the people and the food.
