Great Alternatives To Grass

By:

For those people and those who simply like something that is a bit different than their neighbors there are plenty of alternatives to having a backyard full of grass. Here are some of the most popular.

Crushed Stone Crushes stone comes in a number of different shapes, sizes and colors, is easy to install and is virtually maintenance free. It also creates a very uniform surface, making it ideal for outdoor dining or lounging areas.

Pavers Pavers, whether they are made from stone, terracotta or concrete, are very versatile and can be used to create almost any kind of landscape. Uniform shapes and sizes are great for creating a rather formal look while irregular pieces can be used to create a casual walkway or informal dining area.

Pavers can even be added to an existing lawn by simply having areas of the turf removed and the pavers positioned to create an attractive checkerboard look. For this kind of project though you may want to call in a professional landscaper to make sure the pavers are laid correctly.

Shredded Bark Shredded bark is an economical and very popular way to give your backyard a makeover. You can just lay a weed cloth on top of the ground, then spread a thick layer of shredded bark on top to create a rather enchanting woodland look. The bark will wear down over time but all you need to do is replenish it with a new bag!

River Stones Want to add a feeling of zen to your backyard? River stones are a great way to do that. The surface they create is, of course, not that even, so they may not be the best choice for a walkway.

Brick Brick adds a great deal of rather rustic charm to even the smallest garden and if you like the look of a crisp edge for your garden, use brick. Set on its side, it makes a great edge. And, because of the small size of bricks, you can accomplish elegant curves as well.
