Graphic Design, Corporate Branding, Web Design -is It All The Same Thing?

By:

Graphic design covers many things. Print work is one type of design. Web work is something that requires different but related skills. Sometimes one designer or firm can handle both types of needs but not always.

Graphic design is a term that covers a broad spectrum of concepts. While related, different skills sets may be required. The term generally refers to things that appear in print but can also refer to web work.

Branded identity, sometimes called corporate branding, is a term that refers to tying all design elements needed for a business together to create visual and immediate identification. Business cards, the web site, forms, promotional materials and advertising will all need to reflect a shared look to accomplish this. This can be accomplished by consistently using the same colors, logo, fonts and other characteristics throughout the entire corporate identity.

Companies will want to find a good logo to start this process. A unique logo should say something about the company and be instantly recognizable as associated with the company. The use of a symbol such as the Shell Oil seashell is a style that may be found in many company logos. Sometimes there is a multiple meaning such as the mustang image used by Ford Motor Company. This logo gives the reinforced meaning of the visual image of the mustang horse but also suggests speed and possibly freedom, as the mustang is a wild horse than runs free. Color also helps with a good logo such as the McDonalds Golden Arches which is known world wide.

Some graphic artists or firms can provide web design under the general umbrella of graphic design. Generally, it is a separate skill provided by a specialist in web design. The knowledge base for designers in both disciplines varies but does have some overlap. The key element is having a good eye for design. There should not be any overpowering elements that detract from the message the design is supposed to provide.

Web design requires knowledge of HTML, Photoshop and as well as things like Flash, SEO, Java or CSS. The pages need to be easy to navigate, consistent in look and style, and easy to read with no clashing or annoying colors. Knowledge of how the pages will display on different platforms and with different browsers is also needed.

Corporate branding should start out with a dynamic logo. Professionals best handle web design and graphic design needs with specific expertise in each area.
