Grapes Growing On A Trellis

By:

Growing Grapes on a trellis or some other strong support structure is very important to the growth of the grapevines. Grapevines can grow to be very large plants but the stems are not sturdy enough to stand on their own. Some may think that grapes grown in the wild, without a trellis or arbors, will still survive. Well these plants do survive but they are not able to produce as much fruit as those growing grapes trellis.

Vines are not able to bear much fruit when they are on the ground, so making a trellis or arbor will keep the vines off the ground and will also save space. A good way to produce more shoots on the vine in your small garden, would be to make sure they are on a good strong trellis. This allows the grape to produce more fruit.

Trellises and arbors have similar purposes but there are some differences. Those who have smaller planting areas are growing grapes arbors. These are more space saving and aesthetically pleasing since they form a beautiful canopy. A trellis is most often used for grape growing in bigger spaces.

Trellises come in different types. Some people are using arbors for growing grapes. The arbors can be quite decorative and very useful. As the grapes mature the grapevines will cover the arbor. The arbor is usually used in backyard vineyards or home gardens. On the other hand, larger vineyards are growing grapes on big, sturdy trellises which are more functional. These structures can be of any shape or size, it does not matter. What is important for this trellis is to provide good, solid, sturdy support for the vines, maximize space and aid the vine in yielding more fruits.

Trellises can also be classified according to their heights. A trellis that is built higher is better for warmer climates. For cooler climates, especially during winter, lower arbors are recommended.

Trellises and arbors are typically made from iron, PVC pipe, aluminum, wood or steel. The style of trellis used would depend on the type of grape that would be grown.

The posts and wires are the major parts of the trellis. The post provides the main support for the wires. Posts should be anchored deep into the ground. In order to secure it you should use cement. On the other hand, the wires are the ones that support the vine. Wires can only be in one row or as many as the posts can carry. The layering of the wires depends on the variety of grape being grown.

Before growing grapes a trellis should already be constructed. Backyard vineyards can use homemade trellises but it is better to have the trellises constructed if the area is wide. Having a trellis constructed would make the trellis more sturdy and standardized. Whether you use an arbor or trellis the first thing that the grower needs to do is to plant the grapes. After which, the shoots would start to grow. The sturdier shoots can be selected and attached to the trellis using a cloth or a rope. Then the growers can just water the grapevines and watch them grow. Once all the planting is done you will begin the fertilizing, pruning and gathering of the fruit.
