Granular Restore Saves The Day

By:

Data is critical to companies whether they use physical machines, virtual machines, or both environments. Secure backup is necessary for any business, but oftentimes data recovery is slow, interrupting business continuity. Option, recovery choices allow for only a complete restoration of the system, a labor-intensive and time-consuming process. Not all data is of equal importance, and there are times when recovery of certain data is urgent. A granular restore can often save the day. This process is advantageous in various ways.
Retrieving communications data. Granular restore is a lifesaver for firms very dependent on communications applications and associated data. Recovery of specific emails or files is simple with a granular restore in the event of data loss. Recent email activity can be delivered to the end user even as the IT department addresses larger system problems.
One-step backup. Granular restore lets companies perform file-based backup and image-based backup with a single backup operation. This can dramatically reduce recovery time while conserving storage space. Other backup and recovery solutions require multiple actions to recover of a complete system and to recover individual folders or files. This process, however, provides quick recovery of important files from a single, general backup.
Continuity during crisis. The pain of disaster recovery along with its operational interruptions is mitigated by a granular restore. Because any important files can be recovered quickly and specifically, administrators can deliver them to the users to prevent obstruction to business continuity. The highly portable nature of the associated backup files also means that IT administrators can deal with disaster recovery either remotely, at the site, or from multiple locations.
Virtual environments. In virtual situations, granular restore allows a single backup and recovery option. If a virtual server crashes, urgently needed files can be quickly recovered from the single backup image and restored them to a separate virtual or physical machine.
The speed of data recovery oftentimes decides whether a crash will be a terrible crisis or just an irritating interruption. This is why companies tend to put a great many resources into data storage, backup, and recovery. The critical nature of the use of business data and communications demands that companies have ways to prevent loss of data. An effective solution, however, will also account for the speed and costs of data recovery. While nearly everybody understands the need for secure, reliable backup, few consider the IT man-hours and opportunity cost from idle staff hours in the recovery process. Rapid recovery of critical data and therefore increased business continuity make granular restore an attractive backup and recovery option.
