Granada Holidays And Vacations

One of the most visited sites is the Granada Cathedral, which took over one hundred eighty years to build and features five large naves and a circular capilla. The cathedral is located just outside the Bib-Rambla Square and was designed by Charles I of Spain as a final resting place.

The Spanish were not the only ones to leave legacies for future generations; the Alhambra is a Moorish palace and fortress that was built for the last of the Nasrid dynasty. The Catholic rulers were coming into power and this wonderful site was allowed to fall apart. In the 19th century, it was rediscovered and now is one of the main attractions, due to the unique Islamic architecture and gardens.

It is now a world heritage site and has gained fame in song and stories through the years. The example of art and beauty of the classic Muslim architecture are evident in any place you look in this collection of fine buildings dating from the early to mid 1300's.

The Royal Chapel is where the remains of King Ferdinand II and Queen Isabella 1 are to be found as is their daughter, son-in-law and oldest grandchild. This building was constructed from 1505 until 1517 and the remains of the royal family were not moved there until 1521.The museum has relics and other historical treasures that can be seen while visiting this area.

The Moorish influence is interwoven with that of the Spanish to make Granada one of the most interesting places to visit when vacationing near the Mediterranean. Even though the Moors were persecuted and forced to convert to Catholicism in the late 1400's, in many places their history and monuments remain, bringing beauty to the beholder.

However, it is not the history alone that brings the visitor to this enchanted place. There are several unique parks and gardens throughout the city; with four types predominating, these are the royal garden, the patio or courtyard garden; the cueva and the Carmen style.

The royal garden style has formally designed architecture and many different flowers and fountains; and the patio style is most often found in monastery or church gardens. There are several gardens that bring acclaim from any visitor interested in seeing the sites of Granada. Whatever the sites, gardens or other attractions that bring you to Granada, make sure and take time to enjoy this entire interesting place where there is such a varied history. Be sure that you rent a vacation home during your stay in Granada so that you are within easy walking distance of the gorgeous parks and town areas and that you can do your Granada touring on your own time, in your way.
