Graduated Cylinders: Be As Accurate As Ever

By:

The best way to succeed in any laboratory experiment is to bank on precision and exactness.. The perfect ingredient to fail in any laboratory experiment is to use useless and inaccurate instruments. This is why most scientists and lab technicians prefer graduated cylinders.

Never commit the mistake of using mere cylindrical objects as a way of measuring liquid substances in the laboratory. There are other options for measuring in the lab, such as using flasks or beakers. However, because of their design, graduated cylinders are more accurate in terms of measurement. These cylinders are very handy and at the same time very accurate. Chemicals of very small quantity can still be measured by this tool.

It is required for anyone who wish to use this tool that he knows how to read the measurement properly. For best results, the liquid should be emptied into the cylinder. In order to become accurate, the person using the cylinder must read the result at eye level. The best way to properly measure something is to prevent from sitting or standing up while reading the measurement. It is typically said that the accuracy of a cylinder is /- 0.05.

Some people are hesitant to use graduated cylinders because they are afraid the glass the cylinder is made of will accidentally break. But the truth is these cylinders are made from stronger materials and not just pure glass. As a matter of fact, some manufacturers create cylinders from plastic to make it less fragile. The clarity of the plastic is generally not as good as glass but they will not break, and it is easy to store them. Glass or plastic are not the only options in terms of materials. Polypropylene is used by many because of main characteristic of strength and being lightweight. People love them because they don't mix and react to some chemicals. Graduated cylinders are made from polymethylpentene. These lightweight and strong materials are already widely used today. Measuring in these materials can be as accurate as ever, thanks to its clarity.

Graduated cylinders have a variety of bases, which makes them easier to use in the laboratory environment. Although the cylinder itself is typically made of glass or polypropylene, bases are generally made of rubber. The rubber bases make them very stable and firm once placed in the laboratory table. Graduated cylinders that are very affordable have plastic bases.

They also come in a variety of sizes. You can choose among 10 mL, 25 mL, and 100 mL. Smaller cylinder can be used to measure even the slightest changes that is why it is more advisable to use smaller ones. If you want to measure bigger volumes then use 1000 mL cylinders. However, before purchasing these large cylinders, the lab should determine that they do really need them. Make sure that you really need a larger one because they are more expensive than the smaller.
