But my attachment to this system arises, neither from the authority of that assembly, nor from a devoted regard to my connections, whom I honour and esteem in the Lord; but from the conviction, upon enquiry, that this system, for which our ancestors so nobly contended, is founded upon, and agreeable to the oracles of God" (preface. iv-v).
