At this point it is beginning to seem like a popularity contest, more so than a battler to the top. Google and Microsoft each taking over their little chunks for the web in an attempt to take over the World Wide Web; while this may seem like a competition merely to be the best, it may actually be about more than just that.

Into Google search results, My Space status updates are being added. Now you won't find these when you are doing just a standard Google search, but if you use one of their new real time tools by choosing updates or the latest options filtering selection. Now this will put My Space in with Twitter and Facebook, showing in the Google real time results. And while all this seems like just harmless competition, is it really?

Consider for a moment the ramifications of the current web war. Microsoft and Google are putting their hands in everyone's pockets. They are rapidly gaining more and more control over the web and the different, very successful companies beneath them. Unfortunately or fortunately depending on how you look at it, Google still holds primary control, and there is little chance of Microsoft taking the whole market from them.

At the same point, if Microsoft can't compete with Google and stays significantly behind them for a long enough period of time, their share of the web based business may wind up eventually being handed over to Google. In the event that this happens, where will the internet be? It will be a system that is primarily under the control of one and only one company. And should a resource such as this be controlled by only one entity?

It seems like there may be more to this battle than meets the eye. As it seems that the goal is not only primary control, but total control. With so much information within the control of just one individual or a few individuals the world could be turned on its ear. And while Google is a more than reputable company now, what if they were to be taken over in the future? Where would that leave the information highway and the power of controlling it? Food for thought.
