Google- Making A Stand For Freedom

Google, the biggest internet search engine is rethinking its stand in the global marketplace, considering the possibility of taking a stand against the human rights, speech and privacy issues in China. There stand would be to pull Google out of China and is in response to the fact that there have been several cyber attacks made against a Chinese human rights group via their g-mail accounts.

Google is up in arms because the Chinese government is censoring the search results in China, limiting what items will be seen in the search results and which will not. In an attempt to make a stand against China, Google is reconsidering its stake in the Chinese market, threatening the possibility of pulling out of the Chinese market completely.

Many companies are appalled at the way the Chinese government squashes the freedom of its citizens but Google is the first company to really take a stand with the country, and it would probably help if more companies took action against this government, but most are afraid of giving up the money associated with such a large market. For Google however, it will cost them quite a bit of searches but very little in the overall profits of their business.

Of course, this move by Google brings to light the question of how far American based businesses should be willing to bend on principles for the dollar. Hopefully this move by Google will help other companies see that a stand must be taken on behalf of the oppressed people in China. It would be nice to believe that Google's statement would help influence other large corporations doing business in China, but unfortunately it does not seem to be affecting other companies do date.

Although, China has since apologized to Google for its actions in an attempt to make amends for the problem, it is not yet known if its actions will support its apology and Google is reserving comment on this for a later date. They are probably waiting to see if China will allow all search results to be displayed to its Chinese users.
