Google & Ford Teaming Up

By:

With the release of the Chevrolet Volt and the Nissan Leaf, electric cars are starting to truly come to fruition. But the practicality for many people still remains an uncertainty. For those who have a long commute or drive a lot during the day, it doesn't seem likely that you will be able to use an electric caryet.

Ford and Google are teaming up to make electric and hybrid vehicles more efficient. By using Googles prediction algorithms, your Ford will eventually be able to know where you are likely going as soon as you step into the car. With that information the, system can use real-time resources to determine the best route for you at any given time on any given day.

The system is designed to begin compiling data on your specific driving habits from day one. Say you normally leave work at 6:45am, after a few trips the system will know when you get into your car at 6:50 on a Monday morning you are more than likely headed to work. From here, Googles system will download real-time data, such as traffic and weather issues, and recommend the fastest and most efficient route to take.

Once the car knows the route you are going to take on that trip the car can adapt its powertrain to be most efficient of the course of the drive. In Europe, for example, London, Berlin, and Stockholm have low emission zones all over the city. With this system the car will know exactly when you are entering that zone and can switch to all electric mode on a hybrid vehicle. By predicting the route and knowing exactly when you will enter this zone, the car can save battery power to make sure you are running on all electric while you are in this zone.

Although Ford has not yet released an all electric vehicle, one is on the way, and their system will make driving such cars a little more practical. The ability to optimize the route to every destination, knowing which roads are marked EV-only, and where EV fueling stations are located will allow EV drivers much more flexibility with their cars.

As Ryan McGee, technical expert, Vehicle Controls Architecture and Algorithm Design, Ford Research and Innovation states, Its all about pure customer benefit and creating individualized and optimized experiences- the right one for each person, vehicle and situation.
