Golf Tips - How To Putt On Multi-tiered Greens

By:

In this golf tip I am going to explain how you can approach putting on multi-tiered greens - or greens with more than one level.

Multi-tiered greens can be very tricky to putt on and bring a whole raft of potential problems for a number of reasons:

1. They are not that common, so you don't get to practice on them much.

2. Judging the pace is difficult, again because you don't get much experience putting on them.

3. The pace on downhill putts is almost impossible to control since gravity takes over as the ball starts to run down the slope.

4. It is so easy to three putt or even worse on multi-tiered greens.

But before we look at how to approach putting on multi-tiered greens let's look at what you can do before your ball lands on the green.

Obviously in a perfect world we want to hit the golf ball onto the tier where the hole is. But we don't always hit perfect shots! If the hole is on the top tier at the back of the green and there are hazards beyond the green this can be a very dangerous shot.

In this situation I would aim for the lower tier since it is a safer shot and then try to two putt

Another situation could be that the hole is on the lower level but right at the bottom of the slope to the upper tier.

There are a couple of options open to you here...

Firstly you could 'under' club. I.e. Take one less club than you think you need. This should ensure you don't go past the hole and accidentally hit your ball onto the upper tier - which as you'll see later is a tricky position to putt from.

Your other option is to try and hit the ball past the hole directly into the slope itself. Club selection can be difficult when trying to do this, but if you manage to choose the right club the ball should roll down the slope to the correct tier. In some situations the ball can run very close to the hole, although obviously you need a little luck to achieve this!

By far the hardest putts are those where you have to putt across the slope and then up or down it, depending upon which tier you are on. So try and at least aim to the correct side of the green if you can.

So - how should you approach putts once you arrive on the green?

How to approach putting up a slope to a higher tier.

Your first and foremost priority is to work on the correct pace to get the ball up the tier. The line is not as important... If you don't get the ball up onto the top tier the ball will run back down the hill and you'll be back where you started.

Once you've judged the pace then you can work on the line. You need to break this down into two parts - what is the ball going to do on the lower level and the slope, and what is it going to do once it reaches the top level?

Remember that the ball will turn less when it is traveling faster and then turn more as it slows down.

How to approach putting down a slope to a lower green.

These can be more difficult than putting up slopes since you cannot stop the ball at the bottom of the slope if the hole is located there - gravity takes over.

As with putting up slopes, your primary aim is to get the ball down the slope. Don't be tempted to roll the ball JUST to the top of the slope and risk leaving it on the top tier...

When reading these putts again remember the ball will turn less as it gathers speed as it goes down the slope. Again break the putt into two when reading the line - how will it turn on the top tier and how will it turn as it goes down the slope and on the lower level?

How to approach putts across the green and then onto another level.

These are usually the toughest putts you can face on a multi-tiered green. This is because it is so difficult to read the line of the putt combined with the pace of your putt. The best way to approach them is again to break it down into two parts, playing close attention to the pace at which you need to hit your putt.

Also focus on how the ball will turn for the first part of the putt when the ball is moving faster, and then how it will turn as it slows down.

My final golf tip when putting on multi-tiered greens is that you err on the side of caution. If you can get your ball within 5 or 6 feet you've done well. Don't try to be too greedy going for the hole and then seeing your ball roll back down the slope or leaving your ball on the top slope when you needed it to run down to the lower level.
