Golf Tips - How To Improve Your Putting Strike

By:

In this golf tip I am going to explain why hitting your putts out of the 'sweet' spot is so important to ensure a consistent strike and give you a drill to help improve your ball striking with your putter.

Every golf club including your putter has a 'sweet' spot. I'm sure you can remember hitting shots that just fly so sweetly off the club and go miles with little effort. That is when you've found the 'sweet' spot.

But why is it so important to find the sweet spot when you are putting?

In a word - consistency.

You want to know how far your putt is going to travel for a given length of swing, and in order to have consistent distance control you need to hit your putts from the sweet spot.

It is true that the putter should move up during the back-swing, down into the strike and then up after the strike. However - these should be VERY slight. This is unlike other clubs that need to have a descending blow to get the ball into the air.

That is why this is such a good drill - you are used to picking the club up on the back-swing and then striking down on the ball since you probably practice with irons and woods more than your putter.

This golf tip will help you keep the putter head on a nice flat plane giving you a consistent strike every time you putt.

Here's how this golf drill works...

1. Get onto the practice green and take out your sand-wedge. Yes I said your sand-wedge.

2. Work with 2 or 3 balls from around 2-3M (6-10 feet) away from the hole.

3. Take your normal putting set-up / grip.

4. Hover the club just above the ground so the leading edge is half way up the golf ball.

5. Now try hitting some putts with your sand-wedge using the leading edge of your wedge and striking the ball on the equator.

What this golf tip is going to do is to ensure you are moving the club back and forward on a level plane (or very close to it).

If you strike the ball correctly it will roll as if you had hit it with your putter.

If you are picking the club up on the back swing your angle of attack will be too steep and this may cause the ball to jump into the air a little. This will mean you are rarely (if ever) hitting your putts with the sweet spot of your putter.

If you are lifting the club up during the follow-through you will 'thin' the ball and it won't travel very far. Again this will mean you are not striking your putts out of the sweet spot.

After you've worked on this golf drill for a while, switch back to your putter and see how consistent your strike is. You will see an improvement very quickly.

Remember that this golf tip is not about working on your distance control. It is only to help with the strike and ensure you are moving the putter back and forward on a level plane.
