Golf Tips - How To Avoid 3 Putting

By:

No-one likes 3 putting!

The most common reason for 3 putting (even with the professionals) is not getting the first putt close enough. If your first putt doesn't finish within the 'magic 8 feet' circle, then the chances of holing the second putt are low. Of course ideally you always want to leave yourself with a really short 'tap-in' putt. If you can perform well under pressure then you'll be a tough opponent!

Here is a great golf tip which will improve your distance control and also help you to practice under game-like conditions. I.e. It will put you under pressure. You need to work on this golf putting drill on a practice green because you need to work between two golf holes.

And this is how it works:

  • Pick two holes on the putting green that are a 'reasonable' distance apart - say 15 to 20 feet

  • Use one golf ball only

  • The aim is to either one-putt or two-putt to the other hole

  • When you have holed the putt, take the ball out then work back to the other hole, again taking only one or two putts

  • Every time you hole in one or two putts, add one point to your score

  • When you 3 putt your score resets to zero and you have to start again

  • Each time you re-start from zero try to improve on your best score

  • As your score starts increasing you will start to feel the pressure. That is why this golf tip is such a good one - it's very difficult to re-create game-like pressure when you are practicing. Once you feel 'comfortable' with a particular putt then choose two more holes to work between varying the length each time. You can make this golf putting drill harder and more fun by introducing these elements:

  • Use two golf holes at different levels. This will make the distance judging harder since you'll be working on an uphill putt immediately followed by a downhill putt

  • Practice with a partner and compete against them - whoever 3 putts first is the loser

  • If you have a large enough practice green, work your way around it and see how far you can get without 3 putting. Again as you progress around without a 3 putt the pressure will start to build!

  • This is a really good golf tip that you'll have fun working on and will quickly improve your distance judging. This in turn will significantly reduce the number of times you are 3 putting - which is something every golfer wants to achieve!
