Golf Swing Tips: How To Develop A Consistent Swing With Perfect Timing For Duffers

Golf is a game, like many games, where our performance level fluctuates from round to round, hole to hole and even shot to shot. Over time we learn to play within our normal range of variation. It is just one of many adjustments we must make to play well on a regular basis.

But what about those other times when you lose your swing all together despite good swing mechanics? I know it happens to me. I am on set up correctly and swinging on plane yet still I can play any better than a raw beginner.

When this happens it usually turns out that I am out of sync on my swing tempo or swing timing. I am too quick in the transition, my hips are ahead of my hands or my forward weight shift is late. Bad timing can cause the ugliest golf shots you have ever seen. Believe me I have been there and done that!

One reason our swing leaves us on occasion is timing. That is our movements get out of sync with each other. The arms swinging and the body turning along with the hands releasing the club head must all be done in perfect timing for a successful golf shot. When done properly is provides the golfer with the basis for a consistent, repeating golf swing

The second reason we find ourselves with an unreliable golf swing is tempo. Simply put tempo refers to the time it takes you to execute a full swing from takeaway to the finish position. The key to good swing is a consistent golf swing tempo. The speed of the swing should be about the same for every shot and every club. It is hard to stay consistent isn't it? If you are like me you need to fight the urge to muscle up on some full shots and swinging your fastest and hardest. You'll do better swinging at a constant 85 percent of your maximum on every swing.

Sync your swing by using the slow down drill. This one is easy enough to do and is just like it sounds. Using any club of your choice perform an actual swing is super slow motion. Check the position of the club and your body at all the key points such as takeaway, 9 o'clock, top, downswing, impact and finish. Repeat the swing but a bit faster this time. Continue to increase the speed with each successive swing making sure to stay in sync. Repeat with a different club until you can maintain the same speed with each club.

Timing and tempo work together to give you a consistent golf swing. One you can rely on even under pressure. The two are not easy to coordinate much less maintain over the course of a round. But when you do your swing will amaze you and be the envy of everyone in your group.
