Golf--it's Easy To Instantly Improve Your Golf Chipping Ability

Golf rounds are often won or lost in the "short game." The short game includes golf chipping and pitching. If you really want to become accomplished in golf, you must become capable at golf chipping. A golf chip is completely different from a pitch; pitching puts the golf ball into a higher trajectory and is accomplished with a wedge. Golf chipping comes into play when you're about 10 to 15 yards off the green.

A bad chip is what occurs when you hit the golf ball too high or too low. You'll either end up with a "fat" chip (also known as a "chucker") that goes absolutely nowhere. Another possibility is a "thin" chip (also called a "skull") that goes flying over the green, giving you an excellent opportunity to chip from the other side.

Want to know how to hit a good golf chip? Hit the ball first instead of the ground. Some golfers say that it's like "squeezing" the ball between the club head and the turf. Putting sufficient acceleration into your golf chipping swing is hard to do. When you're faced with a chip shot, your greatest fear will probably be hitting the golf ball too far. That fear often causes you to unconsciously slow down your swing. Slowing down is exactly the opposite of what you want. To keep your acceleration without overshooting the green, take a shorter backswing. As a general rule, your chipping backswing should be from a quarter to a half of your full backswing.

So which of your clubs is best for golf chipping? There is actually a fair amount of debate over the proper club to use. In the end, the most suitable club for you is that which you personally prefer, the one that gives you the best backspin, and the one that gives you better overall precision. Begin by experimenting with each of your clubs to find one that seems to work the best for you. After that spend all your time practicing with that club. A majority of golfers believe that it's preferable to master one club and vary the distance of your shot with your backswing. That way you don't have to become proficient with four or five clubs and then decide which one to use based on the distance factor alone.

More often than not, golfers find that a more narrow stance works better for golf chipping. Stand closer to the golf ball and grip the club farther down the shaft. The ball should be back in your stance to help you hit the ball more solidly.

Proficient golf chips are low and designed to get the ball rolling as quickly as you can. When golf chipping, you aren't trying to hit the golf ball up and high. The one occasion that you actually need lift when you're chipping is if there is something in your way that you need to get over like high grass or a bunker. Otherwise, get the golf ball onto the green as soon as possible and let it roll.

Playing the short game effectively usually means you have to get the feel right. The best way to get the feel right is practice. Practicing your chip shots will help you find out which club is best for you and how to attain the best form. There's really no need to go to the practice range. Stake out an area on any reasonably sized area of grass and then practice chipping the golf ball into that spot and notice how your skill improves.
