The start of the gold rush era for Bendigo city was way back in 1851, where the fields were mostly inhabited by diggers until around the time the cities last gold mine shut down in 1954. The close was largely due to the depth and amount of water in Bendigo's ever-deepening gold mines but thankfully with the latest technology, the city was able to begin mining again recently and continue to do so today, with the knowledge of substantial amounts of gold still awaiting in the depths of the goldfields.

Now Victoria's second largeset inland city, Bendigo has a population of around 88,000 according to the Australian Bureau of Statistics. North-west of Melbourne, approximately 131 kms lies the heart of Bendigo which is proudly home to Australia's only provincially headquartered bank and stock exchange being the Bendigo Bank and the BSX.

The Central Deborah Gold Mine welcomes hundreds of tourists as a well known tourist attraction in Bendigo. It was one of the last gold mines to stop operating in 1954, after a good fifteen mining years in which produced a notable 929 kgs of gold.

Being the countries third largest cathedral, The Sacred Heart Cathedral is located in the city of Bendigo while being said to be one of the largest in the southern hemisphere.

The Bendigo Art Gallery showcases some wonderful art collections including one on the Bendigo goldfields aswell as Australian paintings, sculptures and decorative arts and it is Australia's largest and oldest regional art galleries.

Showcasing a living history display from the gold rush days to the present for the Chinese people of the city, The Golden Dragon Museum is a popular Bendigo tourist attraction. Joss House was built by the Chinese diggers in the 1800's and is said to be the only surviving historic temple, in regional Victoria, still used as a place of worship.

The richest professional 400 meter running race is held in Bendigo every year in which thousands of tourists visit the city over the exciting two day event. The city also has some popular festivals including the Dahlia and Arts Festival and the Bendigo Easter Festival. Both of these events attract many visitors to the city and both are held annually.

The Bendigo National Swap Meet is said to be the largest swap meet in the southern hemisphere which is held every year for the nation's car enthusiasts.

The world's most significant collection of wood-fired kilns, which are all heritage listed, are held in the Bendigo Pottery Interpretive Museum, which is said to be the nation's oldest working pottery.
