Gold Sellers Beware!

By:

Have you seen those advertisements on television or the Internet for mailing your old jewelry or scrap gold away to get a check back in the mail? It seems too good to be true. However, you can receive a check back, but maybe it isn't going to be the best price you could get for your gold. Shipping fees and handling costs are often deducted before the worth of the gold is determined. It can be far better to get multiple price opinions before sending your gold to one gold refinery and trusting they will give you the best price for it.

Some companies are only willing to give you pennies on the dollar for what you is worth. This can cause you to get far less money than you would if you took your gold to a local pawn shop or precious metal buyer. It can be exciting to get this money from things you have just lying around the house, but caveat venditor.

Caveat venditor is a Latin phrase meaning: Seller beware. It is the opposite of 'caveat emptor', or 'buyer beware'. Literally, know what you are selling and what it is worth before you sell it. Once your gold and precious metals have passed out of your hands, be certain you have gotten the best price for them that you can.

If you choose to sell your gold by mail, check the reputation of the company before you do. See what complaints might be lodged against them from past customers. If they are a company that cares about their reputation and customer services, there will few if any of these complaints compared to a company that chooses to disregard their customers. See how long they have been in business.

A company that has only been in business for a short while might not be your best choice if they have no track record. Call the gold refiner to see what prices they pay standard for different types of gold. If the company has a chart on their website listing their prices paid as well as an index like the NY COMEX or the London FIX, that is good sign especially if it is accompanied by the percentage fees they charge for processing the metals.

So, remember, when selling your gold: get multiple opinions, sell to a reputable company, and make sure the gold refinery is upfront and honest about how much money they are going to be buying your gold for before you sell to them.
