Go Now Or You Might Not Go At All

"Wherever you are is the entry point." ~Kabir

There are many examples from literature, the arts, philosophy and even the esoteric that tell us the same thing as today's quotation: begin from where you are.

When we know we want to change, it's so easy to think, "Well, first I have to
. . . get the kids through school
. . . get a certification
. . . get my college degree
. . . save up enough money, etc.

While it's certainly true that some of these items might indeed be considerations in the timing of our moving forward, at times it is important to just START. And that might mean ignoring some of the 'reasonable' plans we think we need to make.

What we have to distinguish is whether these objections to moving forward are designed to keep us in our comfort zone or whether they are notices telling us to do some planning and preparation before we move forward.

Only we can know what is best for us.

But I have often seen life call to people so strongly that they had no choice but to jump off the proverbial cliff.

Let's take a look at some of the more common objections to moving toward that dream career to help you figure out where you might be right now in your process.

When people say things like they have to get their kids through school or wait until a particular event happens, they might be more focused more on others' values rather than their own. Others needs are important but if we spend a lifetime 'waiting until' we may find we no longer have the energy or interest to pursue that passion.

I've also seen people balk at applying for that dream job or that big promotion because they don't have the 'credential.' For example, I have a friend who is brilliant at creating innovative technology applications.

When I suggested she apply for a position at her 'ideal' company she balked. Why? Because she did not have a college degree. The company was not requiring that, but she placed it there as an obstacle. Fortunately, she overcame that self-imposed obstacle, was hired by the company and has since had multiple promotions. She now works regularly with the executive team.

Are you doing the same thing? It's one thing to have a CPR certification if you want to be a paramedic; it's another thing entirely to believe you have to be certified by PRSA (Public Relations Society of America) in order to effective at PR.

Really look at the obstacles you believe are in your way to going for that dream career. Even some so-called realistic obstacles might be overcome by sheer daring and persistence.

The important thing, really, is to take a step in the direction you want to go. Just one step; then the next one and the next.

But that step always starts with where you are now.

In the Tarot deck one card is called 'The Fool.' He is standing on the edge of a mountain ready to step off. What the card does not indicate is that when he does take that next step, he does not step off into oblivion. Rather, the mountain extends itself a little bit each time he takes his next step.

This is a wonderful analogy to what happens when we make that leap. Life extends itself to us, putting ground under us, supporting us in where we want to go. But if we don't take that first step, we may never get there.

You're always only here. This is where you begin. This is the place from which you begin reaching for your career dreams and life purpose.

Here's to your journey.
