Gmc And Buick Dealers Still Going Strong

By:

A Buick is an entry-level brand of General Motors. They have been around since cave dwellers. Well, not really, but they are the oldest American still-active brand in the world. In 1899, the Buick Auto-Vim and Power Company was established in 1899. In 1903 it was incorporated as the Buick Motor Company by David Dunbar Buick. Buick was born in Detroit, Michigan. He did not hold on to his company long and in 1904, it was taken over by James H. Whiting who moved to company from Detroit to Flint, Michigan. Buick sold his stock for a small sum upon departure and died twenty-five years later in modest circumstances. Little did he know how large his company would become.

At the turn of the century, two prototype vehicles were built in Detroit. Four years later another prototype was build for an endurance run. This convinced James H. Whiting to start producing the first model cars for public sale. The architecture of this prototype was the basic Model B. The first year of sales, 37 Model B's were produced and sold. Unfortunately, none has survived. Even by today's standards, the 1904 Buick was optimally engineered. It had a flat-twin engine perfectly balanced, with torque to the chassis in a longitudinal manner, avoiding front end lift. The engine was mounted amidships, which still is considered the optimal location. Not a bad beginning for the car industry. No wonder Buick has remained in business for over 100 years.

William Durant was quickly brought in by James H. Whiting to manage the company. He was a natural salesman and soon had the Buick company as the largest car maker in America. Durant began a series of corporate acquisitions. He called the news mega corporation General Motors. Originally, the individual manufactures competed against each other, each division targeted one class of buyers. The Cadillac was the top of the chain with Buick directly beneath. This line-up continues today with the Buick coming in right under the Cadillac for those wanting to spend a little less or not wanting to be quite as ostentatious as their neighbors.

Today, you can find GMC dealers in New Jersey and Buick Dealers in New Jersey, both selling quality cars. The SUV market has held steady with GMC Terrain, and Yukon's being strong sellers. Maybe not as old as cave dwellers, but Buick and GMC have had in impressive history and is here to stay, despite some rough economic times lately.
