The earth is naturally warmed by rays from the sun which passes through the atmosphere to the surface. A growing problem today however is that rising greenhouses gases, primarily carbon dioxide are trapping more radiation pushing global temperatures up.
The reality of this change in climate temperatures might be pleasant initially, but it will quickly give way to increasingly violent weather extremes here and abroad that will have a devastating impact on billions of people.
Carbon dioxide isnt the only gas responsible for the greenhouse effect, but it does account for over half. Methane is a growing contributor however limiting the output of this gas is a lot harder therefore sights are set to lower CO2 emissions.
The burning of fossil fuels in the transport sector is responsible for around 25% of CO2 emissions with aviation and cars as the main culprits. Therefore we see it imperative to control and curb these emissions; otherwise the planet will only continue to warm up. It has been predicted that by 2100 if we carry on the way we have been temperatures could rise as much as six degrees.
It has also been suggested that the proportion of the worlds land surface thats able to support human habitation would shrink perhaps by 15-20% by the end of the century.
Albeit it there is more to protecting the planet than by just curbing CO2 emissions, but engines also emit carbon dioxide, nitrous oxides and hydrocarbons, all of which have an impact on the environment.
But in a bid to crack down on this pollution, there are changes we drivers can make to cool our planet down. It may feel that motoring is 20 times more expensive than ever before however its almost 20% lower than it was 20 years ago. One argument that has come to attention lately is our public transport system which is believed to be part of the problem. We think its in need of a revolution and many people are avoid it as its poor service, poor image and the number of vehicles are of poor quality therefore pedestrians are opting for personal vehicles, whether it be a used
BMW 3 Series in Northampton or a Jaguar XR in Essex. Car buyers, drivers and even pedestrians all need to start making greener choices in a bid to save the planet.
