Glendale Office Space Once Considered For Historical Status

By:

The Glendale Office Space in mind is the original Earthling building.
Perhaps it was a bit premature to consider the structure for historical status, and inclusion in the state rolls for such buildings, but impacts on history should be recognized, and Earthlink did have (and does have) impact.
Earthlink was one of the original internet phenomenons. It was the facebook of its day, in a way, and its only real rival was America Online (AOL).
It was the brainchild of Sky Dayton, a young whiz with a computer, and it rapidly grew into a giant.
The first building built to house this internet corporation is located in Glendale on Los Feliz avenue. It is three stories tall, the ground floor actually being a spacious garage.
The building is almost castle like in its demeanor. On the sides are large patios, one of which is a common patio that all the tenants may enjoy. In the past years it has become the home for many
Interestingly enough, while internet access is normal, it is not what you would expect from an internet building. This is because technology has evolved, and what worked in the nineties sometimes has to be upgraded to keep pace with the evolving sciences of the internet.
The subject of historical status first came up in a series of meetings between the building manager, Robert Cohen, and his internet programmer, Al Case. Both men liked the idea of appending august status to the building. Unfortunately, there was one large obstacle in the way.
In researching how to be selected for historical status, Al came across one of the prime considerations: the building must not be modified.
Unfortunately, the building has often been modified, any tenant may modify with sufficient and proper notice, and management has modified many of the suites to accommodate the needs of the tenants. The good side of this is that it offers some of the best office space rent glendale has to offer.
The bad side of this is that does stand in the way of becoming an historical structure.
To become eligible for historical consideration the building needs to be returned to the original condition it was in when Sky Dayton made his offices there. To do this the original plans would have to be found, and such things as the original hardware (doorknobs, etc.) would have to be replaced.
While building management would love to do this, it would also curtail future modifications to the building, and end the managements ability to appeal to incoming tenants who wish to change things around a bit.
Thus, this wonderful Glendale Office Space will continue as prime rental, and put historical landmark possibilities on hold.
