GLBT, a common denominator used to refer to gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender has a special place in certain cities of the United States of America. In a recent poll featuring the 15 gayest cities in the States, Minneapolis has ranked number 1.
Minneapolis- St Paul are two distinct areas and cities, of which the latter is the state capital and the former the largest. Together these cities are known as the twin cities. The community, despite its ardent church goers and sometimes vociferous protests have largely accepted the rising GLBT community and all it entails.
A major aspect of the GLBT events organised is the Pride Festival which carries on for one week during the last week in June. This commemorates the Stonewall riots in New York in 1969 a focal point in the history of gay and lesbian rights. This year marks the 40th anniversary of the event and the Twin Cities Pride Week is set to take place from the 17th 26th June 2011. GLBT oriented events take place through the entire month of June culminating in the Pride Festival on the last weekend in June.
The Pride Week festivities include events such as the Pride Boat Cruise a popular event for which tickets disappear fast, The Pride Picnic at Como Park which is a free event for the whole family, The Pride Block Party at Bryant Lake Bowl is the pre festival bash with lots of music and dancing. The Pride Festival takes place on the Saturday and Sunday at Loring Park and is a free event with a host of fun activities for all ages, genders, and groups. Commitment ceremonies for the GLBT community are a popular event during this festival where couples express their love and commitment to each other. The month culminates during the Ashley Rukes GLBT Pride Parade, a glitzy, glamorous event filled with sequins, feathers, rainbows, dancers and plenty of beer.
