Giving Your Puppy The Proper Care And Attention

The arrival of a new puppy is always grounds for celebration, especially for children. However, some people seem to forget animals are living beings, which need care and attention for a lot longer than the day he arrives. They can represent a lot of fun and games, as long as they are given the proper care and attention they require.

The needs of your puppy regarding the kind of care and attention he requires will depend on the breed, and his surroundings. Some breeds of dog, for example the German Sheppard, are natural guard dogs, and will tend to be more defensive against strangers around the home. Other breeds like the Chihuahua are more comfortable in small places. Their size and bone structure are not really designed to run around fields or defending a home. If you live in an apartment this could be the breed for you. A Great Dane, on the other hand will most definitely need open spaces, or he will develop joint problems and lack of enthusiasm.

Training your puppy will take no more than a few days, given that your intent is sincere and decisive. There is no need to at it for hours, since your dog is likely to lose interest and drop the activity all together. You should start off your puppy with basic instructions, like come, heel, and stay. As they grow bigger and smarter, you will be able to add more instructions as you deem necessary. When training your dog, you are spending quality time with him. This means, he will not only learn obedience and a few tricks, you will also be building a closer relationship with him.

Not training your dog can have an unwanted impact in your home. Results include dog stools all over the place, vandalized furniture, and shoes that look like dog food. Young pups can hardly tell what it is that you consider bad behavior, and need time and attention to be taught a few lessons.

There are a number of products available today that aim to help pet owners train their dog quicker and easier. Special, low calorie treats, dog collars, kennels, whistles are just some examples of what you can find at your local store. However, as always you are best advised to consult with your veterinarian on what's best for your dog, before using any of these new gadgets on them.
