Giving Up Your Smoking And Nicotine Addiction Is Not Going To Be Easy

By:

Being addicted to smoking tobacco is no different at all than being addicted to other substances. While it is true that a nicotine addiction will not make you crazy headed in the same way that other drugs or alcohol might, it is still a serious addiction that can cause you to be irritable and have mood swings and anxiety. When a person is trying to stop being dependent to any substance, it is going to be difficult for most people to stop using it and nicotine is no different.

The good thing about a nicotine addiction is that it does not take all that long to get it out of your physical system. Getting the addiction out of your head is an entirely different matter. People that stop smoking tobacco can have an emotional craving for the nicotine and the smoking habit itself sometimes for years after they have stopped. The only thing that can really conquer these cravings is time and willpower. You might have been stopped smoking for five years and still have that urge to smoke just pop up from out of nowhere. This is true for other types of addictions as well.

A person that is going to try to stop smoking, must find some way to be prepared for the emotional cravings. Once the nicotine has gone from your systems and the physical withdrawals stop, the emotional tugging will still be very present. People deal with their cravings in different ways. Some use a nicotine gum, but that does not satisfy your desire to hold and puff on a cigarette. Some people choose prescription stop smoking pills, but they will often cause anxiety or depression. Who needs that when quitting smoking alone causes those things?

Although it is definitely the wrong thing to do, many people deal with cravings and nicotine withdrawals by eating. This is a bad mistake too because you are just trading one problems that causes you physical harm for another. The reason a lot more smokers do not try to quit is because they are sure they will gain a lot of weight.

It is good to have in mind some way for you to deal with cravings before you attempt to quit smoking. Have friends that you can call. Get involved in some physical activities like joining a sports team or a local gym. This way instead of packing on the pounds while you are trying to quit, you can actually take a few off. Exercise can help relieve the stress and anxiety created by trying to quit. If you must eat while you are trying to quit, make sure they are healthy snacks that are not very fattening like fresh vegetables. Carrots or celery sticks might not sound appetizing, but all of that crunching and munching will give your mouth and hands the satisfaction of having something to occupy them and it will not add to to a lot of extra pounds.
