Giving Birth At Home

By:

There is no greater joy than childbirth and no better way to experience it than giving birth at home. A certified midwife and/or doula may be in attendance to help support the mother and give her expert advice on herbs that can speed her healing, birthing positions to make birthing more comfortable and/or more productive as well as teaching basic baby care. The midwife will also measure and weigh the baby and keep a record of all of the baby's birth statistics as well as signing the birth certificate application. A midwife is a blessing to have in your home as they provide added comfort due to their training and experience in assisting in the birthing of babies.

Giving birth at home puts the mother in control of her birthing experience. She may choose to labor in a warm bathtub and then climb into her own comfortable bed to give birth, or even opt for a water delivery if she chooses. She might labor on a birthing ball; give birth on a birthing chair or squatting near the side of her bed. There are any number of positions and other birthing options to choose from, all of which are far more comfortable than a hospital bed with hard metal stirrups holding the woman's feet.

Due to the number of positions and different massage and relaxation techniques that a woman may use, the pain medication so readily dispensed in hospitals is not needed. Many women profess to experience "pain-free childbirth" due to learning to relax their bodies and minds and get into a position that is most comfortable for her own body. Using a warm bathtub during labor is known to dramatically reduce the discomfort associated with the contractions and sometimes the father will even use a pitcher to drizzle the warm water over the mother's belly during the contractions. This is not only pleasurable and pain-relieving for the mother, but it also allows the father to be a more active participant of the birth.

Speaking of the father being a more active participant; he may even be able to "catch" the baby or in other words, assist with the delivery. Unlike the hospital with its stiff rules and regulations, giving birth at home puts the parents in charge. This is, after all, their baby and he or she does not belong to a doctor or hospital. These are just a few of the best reasons for giving birth at home, but there are many others as well. Why shouldn't a baby be welcomed into the world where they are going to actually live?
