Give Your Kitchen Shine With Countertop Resurfacing

By:

Over time almost every kitchen begins to show signs of aging and wear and tear. The aging is usually most apparent on the counter surfaces which endure a lot of punishment from normal daily use. Rather than suffering through an expensive and usually messy renovation, homeowners may well choose countertop resurfacing to give the kitchen area a face lift and restore these work surfaces to their former glory.

Remodeling any area is often messy, time consuming and very expensive. Resurfacing a counter area can be done much more quickly and usually much more affordably. The tired dull kitchen can be transformed thanks to a resurfacing project which usually is only a fraction of the expense of full countertop replacement or a kitchen remodeling project.

The means used to resurface a kitchen or bathroom counter depends of course upon the surface area and the type of material. Laminate countertops may be removed and a new surface applied relatively easy. The average do it yourself home improvement enthusiast may find it well within their capabilities.

However removing an old surface is not the only way to refresh the looks of a kitchen. There are materials which can be applied to a laminate counter which can prepare it to take a new look. An epoxy type coating can be applied to the old laminate and then covered with a solution which when dried will give the appearance of granite or marble. Professional resurfacing of this nature is often available from countertop experts as well as through some do it yourself kits.

While marble and granite counter surfaces are beautiful and can last for many years, the beauty and shine of these surfaces may be degraded during normal use. Even with the very best maintenance and all care taken, they eventually will need resurfacing or possibly repair. Normal wear and tear may be corrected by shaving a very thin layer from the stone and then polishing the surface. Once it is gleaming and new again, a sealant should be applied to keep this beautiful counter in top shape.

A classically elegant and very durable counter surface is the butcher block. True butcher block surfaces are well made and sealed carefully but eventually even these durable counters may begin to show the effects of every day use. This is when resurfacing and repair can save a beautiful counter and avoid extra expenses. A repair service will help glue down or attach blocks which have come loose, they will sand and shine the surface and seal it so it can continue to beautify the kitchen area.

Good countertops are meant to stand up to a lot of punishment but in time they will all require repair or replacement. Budget conscious homeowners often choose resurfacing to beautify and rejuvenate their kitchens and not break the budget. No matter what material a counter is made of, there is usually a way to resurface it and avoid the pain of remodeling.
