What does actual research say though? The truth is, the majority of gift cards are received with joy by recipients. According to the National Retail Federation, gift cards are the most desired gift of the season.
In a 2008 survey of more than 8,000 consumers conducted on behalf of the retail group by Ohio-based BIGresearch, almost 55% of reported that they prefer to receive gift cards. The reason most gave is that they prefer the flexibility of them.
According to this survey, gift cards were preferred over electronics (ie, DVDs, CDs and video games); or clothing and accessories. Half the respondents preferred gift cards to electronics and almost the same amount (49.8%) preferred them to clothing and accessories.

This is the most important thing to remember when buying gift cards. Only purchase from sellers who are the actual selling agent, not a listing agent or auction site. If you purchase from sites like these, you run the risk of gift card fraud.
How do you know if a gift card seller is reputable? Ask if they are a third-party seller. Check to see if theyre a recognized member of the Better Business Bureau. Check their customer service policy, ie, do they stand behind every transaction.
