Giant Teddy Bear & History

By:

The word giant can be traced back to the word gigas from Ancient Greece in which it was used in referring to men of great size and strength. In addition, it also comes from the old French word geant. Its meaning today has not changed. When we look at soft toys, such as the giant teddy bear, we know that it means something that is great in size. And, thankfully, we are just lucky at all that we have the option of choosing such an iconic plush toy in a size that could only once be something we dreamed up in our mind.

When teddy bears were first created in 1902, they were by no means giant. The very first teddy bear, referred to as Br 55 PB, was just 22 inches or 55 centimeters tall when seated hence the number in its title. That letters that follow signify it was made of Plusch (plush) and was Beweglich (movable). This first jointed bear made his public debut in March 1903 in Germany at the Leipzig Toy Fair. It is hard to imagine that he received a very cool welcome, in fact, he was referred to as a 'stuffed misfit.' As the fair came to a close, however, the creators the family Steiff were approached by the chief buyer for the toy department of New York wholesaler George Borgfeldt & Co., Hermann Berg. He had been searching in vain for new ideas and when he saw the toy bears, he immediately saw their potential and ordered 3,000 of them.

That initial order of 3,000 bears, eventually became what we know now as the modern teddy bear. And then, over time, like just about everything else (from food to cars to houses) giant teddy bears were produced and snapped up by collectors and lovers of these irresistibly soft, cuddly, plush toys. There is very little that comes close in the world of toys, to the giant teddy bear, which serves as a friend, companion, pillow, and all around great comfort in times of woe. A toy train, for example, just would not provide the same kind of huggability factor, no matter how hard you tried.

For those that have never had the pleasure of enjoying a giant teddy bear and all it has to offer, don't you think there is no time like the present to give it a go? You will soon discover that all the fuss made over these soft toys with the semi-human attributes, is not really over the top at all.
