Getting Your Suitcase Together

By:

Vacation time? No doubt a much needed one like most people these days. While the joy of a well earned vacation beckons, it can be less than idyllic trying to pack at the last moment particularly, if you snagged one of those last minute super deals.

Take a moment to take a breath and then review this list to make quick work of that last minute panic pack.

Ladies - for a 12-14 day hot vacation I recommend

  • 3 cotton camisoles in neutral colours for layering

  • Zip-up jacket and track pants

  • Cardigan or hoodie

  • White jeans

  • 2 pairs of shorts (2 golf shirts if you will be golfing)

  • A long dress for dinners and one short dress for day (knit fabrics are the best for travel)

  • Swimsuit and cover up

  • Beach bag for day, small evening bag and a reusable shopping bag

  • Sleep wear

  • Scarf or pashmena (for air conditioned places)

  • Under garments

  • Sunglasses and sunscreen (a waterproof spray with high SPF is the most versatile; test it on your skin before you go for allergic reaction and/or smell)

  • Straw hat

  • Flip flops, wedge sandals and running shoes

  • Toiletries (think small, leaky bottles can be bagged as can the whole kit to protect clothing)

  • Good book (if youre in the mood for spontaneity, most hotels keep a library of books left behind just ask!)

  • Camera (and spare flash memory with anti-static sleeve to protect your memories)

  • A good rule of thumb is to make sure that each piece of clothing goes with at least 3 other items in your suitcase.

    For the men out there...

The trauma of clearing security can put a damper on even the most jovial vacation mood (regardless of the Cuba Libre(s) beckoning on the other side). Heres a few tips to make your passage an uneventful breeze:

  • Wear a light coat with sealable pockets, velcro or zippers. Before you get to the line, put your belt, wallet, keys, phone, etc. in the pockets. Let the jacket go through the x-ray but hold onto your passport and boarding pass.

  • Wear slip on shoes with no buckles.

  • If you have a gel bag for approved toiletries, keep it at the top of your carry-on. Dont waste your time or other peoples fumbling.

  • Wear comfortable clothing, loose and light enough to not constrict when you sit down for a long flight.

  • Pockets invite investigation. Skip wearing the multi-pocket khakis and opt for a simple cotton pant or sweats.

  • If you travel frequently, it can be a huge stress reliever to keep a check list of your favourite travel items in the bag along with pre-packed essentials (spare toiletry and makeup kit anyone?). The check list will keep you on task while you speed pack and provide peace of mind if you review it before you return.

There. Now scoot! You have a plane to catch! Enjoy, relax and have a safe holiday.
