Its not just the stink you have to look out for. These insects feed on green and are most often found outdoors. In the colder months, its not uncommon to find some that have come in seeking warmth (typically beginning in late September or early October). When they do make their way inside, it is vital to catch them as quickly as possible because they reproduce so quickly and it wont take long for a few to turn into many.

The brown marmorated stink bug (BMSB) can actually range in its shading. Marmorated refers to its marble-like coloring. Also called the East Asian stink bug, one thing doesnt change, and thats the smell. When frightened or sqashed, it will exude a stench similar to that of rotting garbage.
BMSB is a highly mobile critter, flying from one fruit or plant to another, draining them of their nutrients. This often makes controlling it even more complicated. Therefore, preventative measures are definitely recommended. To stop these pests from getting inside your home, try to blockade all entry points. This includes caulking around gaps in windowsills and weather stripping your doors. As an added benefit, these measures will keep your home warmer in the winter and could help reduce energy costs. Youd be surprised how small of a hole many pests can enter your home through. Be sure to check your foundation for cracks or holes regularly. Dryer vents and entry areas for pipes and wires are often easy ways for different types of pests to get in.

These bugs are most commonly found attached to fruits like peaches and apples and vegetables like beans and peppers. Avoiding growing these in areas where the bug is common may reduce your risk.

Different chemical agents are also available to keep the brown marmorated stink bug and his friends away. Spraying a synthetic pyrethroid insecticide can work both as a repellent and as a knock-down pesticide which will kill the bug instantly. Such synthetics include brands like Demand CS and Talstar. These professional strength products are available for purchase through special suppliers. It is important when applying any chemical to use only as directed. Take the time to read labels for safety and proper use.
