Getting Through Early Drug Abuse Recovery

By:

The early days of drug abuse recovery can be very difficult. There is probably nothing more dismal to an addict in addiction recovery then the fact that they are going through a process which seems like it takes forever! It is quite likely that you would have experienced one-on-one counseling, group therapy and various other experiences if you have just gotten out of a alcohol and drug treatment program. Those are exactly the experiences that you should continue throughout your addiction and recovery process. Some of the most important things that you must do in order to overcome your addiction:

Continue Counseling - The absolute most important thing to make sure you do is to continue going to counseling even after you finish your program at the treatment center. To keep you right on track in your recovery efforts, your therapists and counselors will be the main ones.

Don't forget that it will take time! - After you have gotten out of the addiction treatment program you may be frustrated with the cravings of alcohol or drugs. No matter how dismal of depressing that thought seems, however, you must remember that recovery is a process that takes time and there is nothing you can do to speed up the process of time.

Stay Busy.- Many recovering alcoholics and addicts often find it hard not to go back to their old lifestyles, but the one thing that can help greatly is to keep yourself occupied. You need to engage in activities that keep you positive and busy to prevent lapsing into a downward spiral.

Live Each Day to the Fullest! Never allow yourself to get to the point of desperation where you are trying to convince yourself that one more drink or high is not going to hurt you. Relax and realize that recovery will be day by day. Many people have to force themselves to take one minute, hour, and day at a time simply to keep their heads above water!

Find New Behaviors- this is something that many addiction counselors will focus on, but what are you going to do when it should have been the time for your daily dose of alcohol, LSD, marijuana, or other drug? Finding something different to do and replacing that part of your day with something cleaner and better for you will help you in the long run!

Let your Family Know! Many addicts don't tell their families but family is the first people that need to know. They will help you get back on your feet and stay there and provide a lot of emotional support when you need it the most!

Make sure you do not give up! - This is a very old clich, but has proven to work many times over! Recovering addicts can never lose hope. You must remember to never give up in the face of temptation or frustration since the drugs and/or alcohol that you just got away from will return to tempt.

Remembering all of these steps to addiction recovery is crucial to getting past the first days, weeks, and months following your decision to stop the substance abuse in your life! Fill your life with good things while adhering to the prescribed course of action to pave the way for a bright future.
