Getting The Most Out Of Your Workout: Selecting A Gym Bag And Being Prepared

By:

I love to go to the gym--it's been one of my favorite pastimes since I was in the eighth grade. But now that I am grown and live a busy life, I tend to haphazardly throw things in my gym bag and go.

Sometimes this means I go without things I should have grabbed because I was in a rush and forgetful; other times this means I am over-prepared and end up carrying things that weren't necessary, which is never a good idea since I end up trekking my gym bag across my university campus along with my books, rendering me exhausted by the time I finally hit the treadmill!

So to avoid issues like this, you need to first select a gym bag that will carry what you need and then decide what you should carry in it.

Sometimes using just an oversized shoulder bag--like one you would carry to the beach--can do the trick. But if you are a person who takes more rather than less to the gym, you need to make sure that the bag has some kind of padding on your shoulder so that it doesn't strain the muscles or weigh you down.

Be aware of the weight of the bag or tote by itself. If it is heavy, then it can probably hold heavier items, but this also can create the unnecessary strain mentioned. Try to find a tote that has struck a good balance between being lightweight and heavy-duty to carry whatever you need without excessive wear and tear.

The next bit--what you actually need to keep with you in your gym bag--very much depends on whether or not you prefer to shower inside of the exercise facility or wait until you get home.

If you are the type of person that tends to work out in the morning or midday, when you have other errands and obligations pressing your time, it may end up being more convenient to shower before you leave. You will want to certainly bring a hair dryer in the winter months so you don't go out into the cold air and catch your death.

Your health club may have a variety of machines and/or activities to take part in, so try to predetermine which you will take part in so that you can take the appropriate clothes. There is nothing that can spoil your workout like getting to the gym and wanting to take a dip in the pool--and then realizing you didn't bring your bathing suit.

Always take a travel-sized bottle of hand sanitizer with you to the gym--and actually use it! If you consider how many people have been sweating up a storm on that elliptical machine before you, you might not use it. But just take some hand sanitizer, and you'll be fine.

Being well prepared for your workout--with an adequate tote and everything you need to enjoy both your workout and your cool-down--will help you to enjoy every trip even more. So what are you waiting for?
