Getting The Most Out Of Legal Recruitment Agencies

For anyone who chooses to look for a new legal job they will usually want to use legal recruitment agencies to some degree or another to help with their search for a new job. Whilst these sort of agencies are clearly experts in legal recruitment there are certain things you can do as a candidate and applicant to help get the most out of working with them.

The first piece of advice is to treat the agencies as you would any potential future employer. That means you should always seek to be professional, put yourself forward in the best possible light and try to impress them with your strengths and experience. All agents will be helpful and friendly and this can sometimes lull candidates into a false sense of security in that they do not try to sell themselves hard enough to them.

By taking this approach with your agent you will put yourself in a stronger position when they are choosing who they might put forward for a role. To do this you need to ensure you spend time working on your CV before you send it over to them. Again, your recruitment consultant may well offer to help you improve your CV and you should take this advice on board. However you should not rely on this to get your application up to scratch. You should do this before you see them so that when you send them your CV it already sells you well and makes the right impression on them. It should show you are a strong candidate who should be taken seriously and be put forward for the jobs they have available.

Once you get to the stage when your CV is agreed with the consultant and they understand what sort of jobs you want you should then make sure you are pro-active and stay in touch with them. By doing this you will show that you are keen and also you will keep yourself fresh in their mind so they will continue to think of you when new roles come up.

Whilst agents are there to work on your behalf and help you, you should never just hand all responsibility over to them and hope for the best. Always make sure you play an active role too.
