Setting aside one night a week that you can spend with your entire family is a great way to strengthen family bonds. When it comes to getting the most out of family night you want to take into consideration the types of things your kids would like to do, as well as what you as their parent would like them to learn. As parents there is a lot to worry about when it comes to raising children.
When theyre younger the lesson may be as simple as never crossing the street without looking both ways. As they get older you may want to move onto things like finances and the dangers of drug use. Here are a few ideas of things you can talk about and do to get the most out of your next family night:
Movie Night- There are a wide variety of things that you can do to make your movie night fun and exciting. You can dress up like your favorite characters, decorate the house, and even build a fort to watch it in. If youre feeling really adventurous you can try making your own family movie. You can all get together and decide on a short plot, assign parts, and then try out your acting skills. With movie editing programs like iMovie, it makes it easier than ever to create home masterpieces.
Going Over Finances- Its important to discuss good spending habits with your kids and help them learn how to manage their money. Depending on their age you can discuss anything from a simple savings account to
debt management skills. Perhaps at the end of the lesson you could tie in a board game like Monopoly to put what you learned into practice while having some fun.
Go Karts- Driving Go Karts can be a lot of fun. You can also combine a short lesson on driving safety by teaching things like wearing seatbelts, how to change lanes, and other general safety tips.
Play a Sport- If youre looking to play a sport that requires more people, see if another family in the neighborhood would like to join you. Something like kickball can provide hours of entertainment. If need be you can always alter the game slightly to fill your needs, e.g. playing two on two basketball instead of five on each team.
Make a Fire- You can make a fire pit in your backyard with a nice dirt area and a few rocks to build a border. Or if you dont have any dirt areas you can pick up a fire pit at stores like Home Depot or Walmart for relatively cheap. With a nice fire you can make some Smores and tell your favorite stories.
Whatever you end up doing remember that not every family night will be a 100% perfect. Some nights you may feel like you get more done than others, and thats okay. The most important thing to remember is that the best thing you can do is spend time together.
