Getting Started With Slate Tile Flooring

By:

As installing a slate tile flooring system is a huge investment and a project, you should consider how important it is to weight out all of the variables involved in embarking on changing this aesthetic in your home.

Where in your home do you want to install the tiles? Do you want them to be placed in your bathroom, your kitchen, or your hallway? Do you know how often the floor will be walked on, (as in foot traffic)? This will be a good factor to consider when deciding where you want the slate tiles to go.

Also, this is where you would consider the general climate of the area as well.

Be sure to be "in the know" about the varieties of substrates available for your slate tiles, as they are the literal foundation upon which you will place the tiles in the first place. The more knowledge you have, the better guidance you will have in your substrate and tile choice.

If you are trying to google what "substrates" are, you are not alone. As beginning home improvement folks, many of you will not know what the heck it is.

If you are like me, you will suddenly think of Mr. Wizard or Bill Nye the Science Guy when hearing the word "substrate". After all, it is literally a biochem term for molecules acting upon enzymes. But, in the glossary book of home improvement, substrates are known as "subfloors", where they act as the foundation for the tiles you place as your floor.

There quite a few types of substrate available. There is plywood, particle-board flooring, planks, oriented strand board, concrete slabs, along with a few others.

Usually, when placing down slate tiles, the best type of substrate is a thin-slab of cement on top of plywood. You may find something else will work better, and it will be only your choice and your choice alone!

Once you have decided and settled on the substrate/subfloor and the tiles, you can proceed to ordering everything (whether it is from an online builder, or at a brick and mortar store).
