Getting Started With Salsa Dancing

In spanish "Salsa" means sauce, but to many others, it is a hot fiery style of latin dancing. Typically the music involves complex African percussion rhythms based around the Son clave or Rumba clave. Salsa can be a partner dance or recognized by solo steps. Other forms of Salsa dancing can be in groups of couples, with frequent exchanges of partners also know as "Casino de Rueda". We will share some important elements of salsa dancing including some basic tips and tricks to take with you on the dance floor.

Having the right shoes for salsa dancing is very important. There are many different types and styles of shoes out there on the market. For men, most importantly, would be to have shoes with leather soles. Avoid open shoes like sandals, slippers, etc. This type of footwear can be detrimental if your partner misses a step and lands on your toes with her heels. Ooch! Solid high heel dance shoes seem to be the standard for women. Find ones that provide support for your feet. Remember to break them in to avoid getting foot blisters. Not Fun!

Start off by taking some lessons. Most salsa clubs offer free 1 hour lessons prior to the club opening up. If you want to fine tune other aspects of your salsa dancing try going to a local dance studio. Guys especially since your job is to make the women look good as a lead. Be sure to practice your shines. Shines are fancy footwork and body actions, danced in separation. This is the part of salsa that makes it so hot because the guy and the girl get to "show off" their individual dance moves.

As a follow, ladies need to be quick and creative within the confines of following the guy. It's important to watch his movements and look for cues and gestures that would suggest what his next move might be. Be sure to avoid bouncing or bobbing around. Always keep your back straight, place some tension in your arms, and allow the music to move your hips to the beat.

Be careful if you have a long ponytail or straight hair. When you get that close while spinning, you can hurt your partner by whacking them with your hair or hitting them in the face.

You want to make sure you relax and fun while you dance salsa. Watching more experienced dancers is a good way to improve on your on salsa skills. With practice, dancing salsa will become second nature and you will have everyone begging to dance with you.

Last thing, always bring a hand towel if you plan on dancing salsa all night because it can get very hot!
