Getting Spooky With Satellite Tv

By:

The supernatural is a topic that continues to fascinate us even in an age when new scientific discoveries are found almost daily. Several television programs have arisen in recent years to take advantage of our continued fascination with the paranormal. However, it's an open question whether they are just for fun, or whether they say something profound about our society.

Probably the best known TV show on the air today is Ghost Hunters, on the Syfy network (formerly the Science Fiction network, for those of us who have had satellite TV for a long time). On the air for more than six years now, the stars of Ghost Hunters are plumbers and septic tank technicians who became interested in investigating paranormal activity they were coming across on several of their jobs. They seem to have a skeptical attitude toward the existence of ghosts and other paranormal activity but claim to have documented several unexplained phenomena on film. However, many critics claim that their methods are extremely unscientific and reasonably credible evidence has emerged of the Ghost Hunters producers faking evidence used on the show.

A similar show, Ghost Adventures, runs on the Travel Channel. Some of the shows about the paranormal that run on lifestyle channels such as the Travel Channel focus more on ghost-hunting from a touristic perspective rather than a purportedly scientific one. In Ghost Adventures, the show's protagonists are generally locked into famous haunted places and often taunt the supernatural presences the allegedly live there in order to obtain evidence of scientific phenomena. However, much of the criticism that can be applied to the methods of Ghost Hunters also applies to the Ghost Adventures show, in the end.

One of the pioneers in the supernatural TV genre was Crossing Over, hosted by a man named John Edward who could allegedly communicate with the dead. Although this show is no longer shown on its original network, satellite TV makes it possible to catch episodes of this show in syndication. In this show, Edward allegedly establishes contact with the dead relatives of audience members and gets clues from them, which he interprets with the help of the audience members in order to communicate information to the relatives. However, the general consensus is that Edward's results are achieved through a combination of clever television editing and cold reading, a technique in which a variety of rapid-fire guesses are used to make it seem like actual knowledge of the world beyond is actually being achieved.

The fact that these shows remain popular despite their dubious scientific merit may say a lot about our society. It's unknown whether interest in the supernatural continues simply because science has been unable to conclusively demonstrate that ghosts and other phenomena do not exist, or because scientific methods will actually never be able to demonstrate that these phenomena do or do not exist. However, it's certainly possible to enjoy these programs on satellite TV without forming an opinion on this age-old philosophical question!
