Getting Results With Your Metal Detector

By:

A metal detector is a highly advanced device. For you to enjoy real use out of it;or have fun with it you must learn a little about how this works and how you can get the best results from it. Devices like these produce a magnetic field and, with reading the changes in that magnetic field, are capable of detecting the presence of metals. If you haven't yet used a latest model of metal detector, you're in for a few more surprises. Not only are these devices able to tell you how far down an object is, they may also tell you the item you're trying to detect.

Your metal detector, if it is like most common models, will use sound to indicate the type of metal it picks up. You must train your ear to hear sounds and to distinguish each one of them. You do this by setting out a few different objects on a wooden surface and running your detector over them. Pick usual objects, like nails, pennies, buttons and others, for you to learn what their sounds are. Make sure to put some valuable objects on the table, as well, so you learn what gold and silver sound like, for obvious reasons.

Your metal detector, depending upon its make and quality, may be able to pick up readings far below the surface of the ground. The closer you swing the coil to the ground, the deeper you can detect metals. You'll want to take into consideration, however, that some surfaces are dangerous to the coil. If you're working in an area with oil or other industrial pollutants present—such as at an old worksite—make sure to keep the coil off the ground completely. On the dry sand of the beach, however, it's sometimes helpful to lightly brush the surface for deeper detection, especially for those that have coarser sand.

Remember that your metal detector needs to be maintained. If the coil housing gets dirty, clean it off according to the manufacturer's instructions. In high grass, be very wary of swinging your detector too fast. You'll miss out on things buried deeply under the surface, of course, but smacking your coils into a protruding rock may just damage your device completely. If metal detection is concerned, take note that a turtle slow pace is most likely to give you the most fun and possibly the most significant finds of all. Practice slow-walking with the device to get the hang of it!
